Summit County (Dillon) Shooting Range
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the more common questions asked and answered about
the range.
Q. Where is the Summit County Shooting
Range?
It is located about 6 miles north of I-70
in Silverthorne up US-6. Please see the map below for
additional location information and directions. The street
address is:
639 County Rd 66
Dillon, CO 80435
You will be looking for this sign on the north side of the road. This is where you turn.

Q. Do I need to contact somebody before visiting
the range?
No. The range is user-operated. There are no
dedicated range personnel to guide range operations. The first person
at the range each day is the Range Officer, and delegates this duty
to another when leaving the range.
Q. Is the range open year round?
Yes. However, it may be somewhat difficult to
access following a heavy snow.
Q. How long is the rifle range? What is the
maximum target distance?
Approximately 110 to 120 yards.
Q. Are targets provided? How about target stands?
For pistol shooting, you must bring your own
targets and target stands to the range. PerSec USA-donated target
stands were recently stolen (April 2011) so it is not looking
like there will be any permanent pistol target stands anytime soon.
A local supplier of target stands that use
1 x 2 furring strips is
Tuffseteel (located right in Dillon).

In April and May, you can probably use the
staking feature of these stands to keep them from blowing over
in the wind. However, when the ground gets dry in June through
November, the soil is hardened clay and driving a stake into the
ground can be difficult. Sandbags may be your best choice during
these months.
For the rifle range, there are target backers out at 100-110 yards. Bring a staple gun and/or tape. The winds can be pretty strong.
Q. Is there a fee to use this range?
No. It is supported through volunteer efforts
and periodic county maintenance.
Q. Are gun rentals available at this range?
No.
Q. Where can I buy ammunition nearby?
Ammunition is typically available in Summit
county from
Sports Authority and
Walmart. Click each link to see their location and contact
information. A list of online sources of ammo can be found
here.
What is the maximum caliber rifle I can shoot
at this range?
There is no stated limit. However, please be courteous
to those around you when shooting very high power rifles (e.g. 50 BMG).
Q. What is the weather like at this range?
Typically more windy than you might think.
Layers with an external wind-proof shell work well.
Current conditions are shown to the right and a local forecast is
available
here.
Q. Are there any days the range might be
closed?
Yes - possibly. The first Monday of each month
is reserved for volunteer clean-up efforts. If a clean-up is in
progress, you will not be able to shoot on that range.
Q. What kind of shooting benches are
available?
There are three ambidextrous shooting benches on
the pistol range with a large table behind them. There are several
benches provided on the rifle range.
Q. Is there a clay thrower on the shotgun
range I can use?
No. You will need to bring your own clays and
clay thrower.
Q. Are there bathroom facilities at the
range?
No. There is also no running water or shelter
from the elements.
Q. Can I bring my old
TV/stereo/printer/computer and shoot it up?
Technically, this may not be forbidden.
However, it is strongly discouraged. These types of items produce an
array of small pieces that are very hard to clean up. They can also
produce unsafe conditions for those walking down range.
Q. Can I bring glass bottles/cans/bowling
pins for targets?
Glass is not recommended (see above). Try and
be courteous to other range users by picking up and disposing of
all your spent targets (and target pieces) in the provided roll-off
dumpster at the range.
Q. How is PerSec USA related to this range?
Why does this web page exist?
PerSec USA uses this range for the live-fire
portion of
firearms classes. Other than being a
conscientious user of
the range, PerSec is not responsible for the operation, maintenance,
or funding of this range. The range is on Summit County property and
is overseen by the
Summit County
Government.
This page is provided as a community
service to those living in or visiting Summit County, Colorado and
